Socioeconomic factors, such as poverty and food insecurity, as well as a lack of access to healthy food, contribute to the problem. Studies have also shown that African American men are more likely to consume a diet high in fat, sugar, and calories. In addition, African American men tend to be less physically active than other racial and ethnic groups. The health implications of chronic obesity are far-reaching. African American men who are obese are at an increased risk for a variety of chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers.


They are also more likely to experience depression and poor quality of life. The good news is that there are ways to prevent and treat obesity. Eating a balanced diet, with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, is essential. It is also important to be physically active, aiming for at least 30 minutes of exercise at least five days a week. Finally, it is important to seek professional help if necessary.


African American men should not be overlooked when it comes to obesity prevention and treatment.
